Tuesday, April 19, 2011: Scheduled arrival date turned into discharge date

I took a ton of pictures the day we left the hospital, so it pains me somewhat to select only a few for this blog.  But I know they will all look the same after awhile for you readers!
Above, a little kicking action. Below, grabbing some vitamin D from the sunshine.
Below, I know it isn't pretty, but it is what it is!  I was actually really happy (though tired, obviously!).

I took a few shots in the going home outfit (purchased online from Old Navy a couple weeks before Everett arrived--I thought it had giraffes on it, but I think they are actually baby horses...) before the professional photographer arrived, just in case Everett couldn't wait that long before freaking out.  He stayed awake for my photo shoot but had nodded off by the time the Bella Baby representative showed up.
This polka dot blanket from Target is SUPER soft and very nap-able.

Saying good-bye to Maine Medical Center.  Daddy went to work for most of the morning, then picked us up at the admitting entrance in the Jeep Liberty.  We had flowers to bring home from Gilbert and Steven and Katie, as well as gifts from Becky (monkey lovey blanket), the FMG (mani/pedi gift certificate), and perhaps some others that I am now forgetting.
I thought Everett might turn into a thumb or finger sucker, but it doesn't seem to be happening much anymore.  He is also not a big fan of any sort of pacifier, although the Soothie brand stays in sometimes. Selwyn loved the Nuk brand, but E isn't a fan so far.  Below is a pic with the little guy wearing his "Daddy's All Star" outfit that Grandma KT gave to Selwyn when he was born.  It sure is handy clothing-wise to have two boys!  Everett has spent a fair amount of time in his newborn-sized clothes, although I don't think it will be too long before he will be solely in the 0-3 month items.  As of April 22nd, he was back up to 7 lbs., 6.5 oz. (a half ounce off of his birth weight), and as of May 2nd, he was up to 8 lbs., 1 oz..  It seems like the breast feeding is working out just fine!

I have been attending the MMC breast feeding support group and went to the Mothering Circle group in Falmouth last week (I'm skippinig it now to get some blogging done!).  It is SO DIFFERENT to be a second-time mom!  Many of the first-timers (and one second timer) are so concerned with number of feedings, number of naps, length of feedings, etc.  I am so glad that I have such a realistic approach this time around and to just let go and let it be what it is.  I mostly just breast feed, but have no problem supplementing with formula (Similac) when it seems like Everett is still hungry after a feeding, which occurs most often in the evenings.  He took a bottle just fine right away, although I do think he prefers the taste of breast milk.

As for sleeping, he prefers to nap on me, although I'm working on setting him down for naps as much as possible (he's in his bouncy seat as I type right now).  Night time certainly needs some work, as he is sleeping curled up in my arms most nights.  I am embracing the "you can't spoil a newborn"/"4th trimester" philosophy at this point and am just trying to soak up all the snuggle time for now.  I've had a MUCH easier time sleeping with Everett in the bed than I ever did with Selwyn, and the co-sleeper is a good option when E is willing to lie down by himself.  Thanks, Suzanne!  Everett is a bit of a noisy sleeper, which seems to be waking up Daddy a fair amount; maybe Selwyn was, too, and we just didn't realize it because he was in his own room right away.

All in all, we're doing quite well with this new little guy!
