Tuesday, June 14, 2011: Selwyn's first dentist appointment

Yet again, Selwyn surprised me by making a non-event of something I worried about ahead of time.  I really thought that going to the dentist was going to be a big production with a lot of fussing and crying and carryiing on.  I was wrong.  Selwyn was a PERFECT ANGEL at "Dr. Whitney's" (Whitney Wignall at Southern Maine Pediatric Dentistry for those of you in search of someone) office!  He happily played with the toys in the waiting room, then as soon as he spotted gloves in the exam room, he was good to go.  The nice hygienist gave him a pair to wear right away, which set a good tone for the rest of the visit.  Selwyn was floored that they were going to give him his own small tube of toothpaste, and he insisted on holding it during the exam.  He preferred to sit on my lap in the chair rather than sitting by himself, but that worked out just fine.  He let them "count his teeth," "look for sugar bugs" (remind me to tell them not to use that cute terminology with him next time as this was the only time he started to look a little worried--bugs in my mouth?!?), and do a full cleaning.  He was amazing.  And at the end he refused the sticker offered to him (not much of a sticker guy) and got to pick a present from the special present box (a small blow-up ball with a smiley face on it)--but the gloves and toothpaste were the real hit!  The hygeniest remarked, "this isn't usually how first appointments go" and the ladies at the front desk were totally taken with him, especially when he gave a huge, "byyyyyyye" as he waved over his shoulder with a gloved hand on the way out the door.  I really have an incredible little boy.
